At Bass Valley Primary School, we follow the Victorian Curriculum. This curriculum outlines what every student should learn during their schooling, and is a common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship. Curriculum areas include:
- The Arts
- The Humanities
Students are supported to set and achieve learning goals in each area of the curriculum, drawing on positive mindsets and problem solving skills to persevere through challenges and learn from mistakes.
Literacy skills are critical for all learning, so at Bass Valley Primary School we use evidence-based methods to ensure all students succeed and thrive in this area. Students participate in a two hour daily session dedicated to teaching these skills.
Explicit and systematic teaching of fundamental knowledge and skills guides our approach to provide the best possible environment for all students develop the ability to read, write and understand the rules that govern the English language.
Teachers are currently being trained in Sounds Write to further develop an approach to teaching reading and spelling that is aligned with what the science states around literacy instruction. This approach recognises that reading is made up of 6 key areas:
1. Phonological Awareness
3. Sight Words
The mathematics program is a 1 hour daily session dedicated to developing mathematical concepts through the manipulation of concrete materials and involvement in a variety of hands on learning experiences. Our daily Mathematics sessions cover the domains of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.
